Paying when you travel: cards, cash and apps abroad
Every destination has its own payment culture. Some run almost entirely on cards and phones; others still turn on cash, especially outside the big cities. Knowing which you are heading into is the first step to avoiding awkward moments and unnecessary fees.
The fees you do not see
Currency conversion, foreign-transaction charges and poor exchange rates are the quiet costs of travel. When a terminal offers to bill you in your home currency, it is usually the worse deal — paying in the local currency is almost always cheaper.
Local apps and agents
In many regions, everyday payments and transfers run through mobile apps and local agents rather than banks. Understanding how those systems work before you arrive makes daily spending smoother and helps you keep control of your budget on the road.
